Update on Summer Camps!

Update on June 5th-8th Camp!

There’s still time to sign up for a my first weather camp workshop (June 5th – 8th) of the summer! This camp is for approx. ages 7 – 10. Other camps with openings still available are June 26th-29th (ages 10+), July 10th-13th (ages 7 – 10), and July 17th – 20th (ages 10+).
As I prepare the topics for next week, I am always reminded how much meteorology combines unique areas of science into something we experience every day.

Here are some topics I will be covering each day:
Day 1:
Atmosphere 101
How warm and cold air interact….the real story!
Why is the sky blue and sunsets are red?
What are weather balloons?  Yes…we use them everyday!
Want to be a TV forecaster? A behind the scenes look at what it takes to deliver the daily weather forecast.
Day 2:
Tornadoes and Severe Weather
We’ll put a homemade tornado machine to good use…
Do you know your clouds??  We’ll play a game and have fun learning the types of clouds and what they do.  There’s even a little Latin involved…but not too hard!
Have you ever seen the world’s largest hail stone?  I’ll bring a cast of it to class!
Day 3:
Technology Day
Doppler Radar 101… we’ll draw our own doppler maps, learn a little history, find out how we use television doppler radar today, and what’s coming in the future!
Science of rain drops…
New from space… a satellite named GOES-R is changing our understanding of the weather.  I’ll have a fun look into how it works!
Day 4:
Lightning and Floods…
We’ll discover what causes thunder and lightning.  We’ll make some lightning ourselves too!
Summer weather safety 101…I’ll talk about everything we need to know to stay safe.  From severe weather to the dangers of sunburn, we’ll cover the topics and questions that come up this time of year!
I have trivia questions ready to go for each day too…so bring your thinking caps! Since this is a weather camp, we will be going outside each day.  As always, parents are welcome to stay if they would like to.  Let me know if you have any questions!
Cost: $40 first student, $35 additional students from same family.
Where: Faith Baptist Church, Sioux Falls
To sign up for camps, email us at karstensclasses@gmail.com with your student’s name, age, and which camp you would like to register for.
